Title
VIKRAM – 174 minutes |
Theatre release |
Plot
The theatre opens to the excited chatter of two generations: the forty-five plus who came to relive their teens reminiscing the legendary Sujatha portray agent Vikram saving missile Agniputran from Salamiya and the twenty plus awaiting agent Vikram to bust a drug mafia penned by the dynamite Lokesh Kanagaraj |
Vikram is a ghost. After a loud, action set piece in the first act, which also sets up the film’s plot without wasting much time. We learn about his life through vignettes of his acquaintances. Like a distorted memory, everyone seems to have a different account of his personality. This brings into the picture investigator Amar (Fahadh Fassil) – an agent in the government’s secret Black Squad- who tries putting different parts of the jigsaw puzzle in place. In the first half, he almost carries the film on his shoulders, which plays out like a racy thriller; the film cuts between different scenarios, building up intrigue through a heart-thumping background score. Here, we’re also introduced to druglord Santhanam (Vijay Sethupathi), who is missing a vital consignment (set up in “Kaithi”) and is being harassed by his unseen boss Rolex.

The movie has no dearth of talents and is technically superior too. The doyen Kamalhaasan has been presented to the next gen in the super duper enjoyable manner by Lokesh Kanagaraj. His directional touch is evident in many places maturing from one movie to another. Brilliant casting… so perfect including the midget henchman. In the first, slower paced half Fahadh Fasil, a police agent, has a meaty share of work to expose the ringleader of the gang of masked men who commit ruthless murders. Vijay Sethupathi, a doctor and narcotics dealer with his gold tooth and merciless killing under the influences of drugs passes with flying colours. In an age of six pack bodies, he makes a dramatic entrance with a baggy belly, totally remorseless of how he is presented. Here is a man who has learnt to choose what suits him. Chembam Jose though predictable is every bit the mean officer. Naren is Naren delivering what is expected. Suriya hypes your expectation setting the stage for the sequel. |
Crew
Lokesh kanagaraj- Direction and Story KamalHaasan , R.Mahendran– Producer Anirudh Ravichander – Music Sathees Kumar – Art Director Girish Gangadharan- Cinematographer Philomin Raj – Editor Sandy Master – Dance Choreographer Anbariv – Action/Stunt Choreographer Rathna Kumar – Dialogues |
The second half is racy and gripping. Lokesh Kanagaraj keeps you glued to the screen with action, brilliant oneliners and puns forming a labyrinth with characters from his previous flicks. Girish Gangadaran presents amazing visuals. For a movie mostly shot in dim light, it is a feast to the eye. So stylish you can’t help but appreciate that he has captured everyone in their best angle. Closeups of Kamal have been done so well. Anirudh blasts a variety of tunes in the background. The BGM is utterly enjoyable. Philomin Raj proves his mettle once again. The true heroes are Anirudh and Anbariv who kept you entertained with a variety of stunts as the movie has stunt sequences from the beginning to the end. Wow!! Brilliant!! Their hard work and creativity prevented boredom. The positive vibes pardon the length of the first half. |
Wow moments
Rolex Rolex Rolex the name is uttered throughout the flim. |
Now, who is this menacing villan using Vijay Sethupathy and his henchman? Woohoooooo, its Suriyaaaa . Who would expect our always sensitive do-gooder hero to turn a tattooed man-slaughtering maniac, butchering as he speaks? “Suriyaaaa you’re a hot-a-looking baddie?” The audience screams nonstop. |
