Ethical Considerations

by Fritz Fernandes

Whom do you approach, when you want to get some work done? To choose a congenial colleague over a competent one appears more likely in organizations according to T. Casciaro / M. Lobo. There is that tendency in the workplace to prefer lovable fools to competent jerks. Moreover, why do firms with a strong positive reputation attract better people?  Good, ethical people do not want to associate themselves with scandalous leaders or unethical organizations. Today, the balance of intelligence and emotion gains wider appeal where people collaborate readily to build profitable networks.

How would you go about it? Many businesses have a complex decision to make when it comes to taking an ethical position, both for its employees as well as acting collectively. Most multi-national firms develop their own moral compass when dealing with regional clients. Bribery, insider trading, theft of intellectual property are seen differently in each part of the world. Nepotism is less tolerated in the West than in Asian nations, profit-generation is not the highest priority in the East, punctuality is very important to the Swiss and loyalty is far more important to the Japanese over liberty.

Is this getting serious enough? Then, its time for a break – you worked hard in the pursuit of organizational success, so it may also be purposeful to pause and consider a lighter side to the ethical dilemma from an average workplace pun-compilation below:

  • I personally have an irrational fear of large intricate corporate buildings. You could say I have a complex complex complex.
  • Why did the financial system collapse in ancient Egypt? They built Pyramid schemes.
  • To err is human; to blame it on someone else shows management potential.
  • “We need somebody for this role who is responsible.” “Not a problem, sir. Every time something went wrong in my previous job, my manager told me I was always responsible!”
  • A man can do more than he thinks he can, but he usually does less than he thinks he does.
  • The most successful investor was Noah. He floated stock, while everything around him went into liquidation.
  • Give a man a gun and he will rob a bank, give a man a bank and he will rob the world.
  • I tried to start a hot air ballooning business but it never took off.
  • I was fired from the orange juice factory. I just could not concentrate.
  • Jeff Bezos stepped down from CEO of Amazon. Too bad, he was in his Prime.
  • Did you hear that the CEO of Apple was arrested? He now has to FaceTime
  • Apple CEO: “We will take this iPhone case all the way to the Supreme Court”.
  • When the CEO of Honda was fired, cops were called to remove him from his office. He refused to leave on his own Accord.
  • What do you call a woman with four sons who are all CEOs?  An executive producer!
  • Why did the CEO of the underwear company cut the introductions short? He wanted to keep things brief.
  • “I’m a walking economy, you know? My hairline is in recession, my stomach is always in inflation, and these two together bring me into a deep depression”.
